Because you can’t see it. The oil cooler on this engine is in the “V” of the 
engine, under the intake manifold and all the related plumbing. All you can see 
is the oil either gushing out off the back of the engine if the leak is 
external, or more commonly, oil in the coolant. A very common malady for this 
engine which involves pulling the heads to resolve. Parts are a minimum of 
about $1500 and Mercedes-only.

My (and Floyd’s) CL600s have this engine. Only way I would buy one is if I knew 
the oil cooler had been replaced. Mine has, it was done by the dealer and is 
listed on the VMI.
