I've had one house with a surround setup, and to be honest, it wasn't that big of a deal for me. That is, I didn't think it made the "experience" that much better. In fairness, however, that was 15 years ago and Dolby 5.1, I think.
I have a late model receiver and TV which play nice together. The receiver drives a pair of Mitch's favorite DCM TimeFrame speakers and a nice JBL center speaker and that's about it. We sit on a couch directly in front and center of the TV and speakers. I've found that it seems like it's always a pain in the butt to have rear speakers. I have had a 4K tv for a while but since receiver did not support that I was really online seeing 1080. I bought a cheap Onkyo receiver that was about $500 from Amazon and have had it a while but have not hooked it up. It has a ton of HDMI inputs and seemed to have a lot of features. I also noticed for some reason suddenly the last couple of days I have zero sound out of the front main channels. Perhaps the receiver failed, I don’t know. Or wires loose to the speaker. Anyway, it was raining today so I just hooked it up and boy what difference both in sound and picture. I so not sure if my old receiver was just way out dated as far as the surround sound goes, or if it was failing but the sound is a huge difference. I am just running the 25 year old speakers that came with my old rack system that was a first gen surround sound receiver. The wife also had one just like mine so we ended up with 2 sets of speakers so I use the 2nd set of back speakers to achieve 7.1. Works fine for me but perhaps one day I will upgrade the speakers.
