The '71 280SEL was considered by many (including the MB engineers) to be the
high point of Mercedes sedans. Offered with the 6 cyl fuel injected engine
as well as a 3.5 (IIRC) and 4.5 V8 which had plenty of power but got gas
mileage in the mid-teens -- but the 6 cyl being a excellent engine that
got much better mpg's.
The L in SEL meant there was an additional 4" in the rear doors giving
excellent rear seat leg room.
The number of miles on this one wouldn;t worry me as much as possible rust.
These cars tended to rust in the floors, fenders, headlight buckets and
rockers - all requiring expensive repairs. Also, the chassis member that
held the bottom of the radiator tended to rust and the bumper ends could be
seen drooping.
All in all, one of the best W108 cars ever built.

I remember a post from a while back, but the details evade me at the
moment.
I know 1971 was the last year before an engine change and some other
things. A woman I know is considering this model and year...at least at

moment. I thought someone said this was the best year to buy, but I could
be wrong. Anything major to be aware of?
