I finally found some reports that compare cars - I'm only interested in the injury claims:

They only go back to '89. http://www.iihs.org/brochures/ictl/ictl.html It looks like this data does not support my view that all Mercedes cars are infinitely superior to all others in crash safety--- The later 126 LWB got a 53, the 124's a 69, and the 201's a 84, where 100 is average. ('89-91 chart). In the '90-93 models chart, the 124 gets a 68, slightly better than earlier, and the 201 moved up to a 83. The SL got a 32 - best number I've seen so far.
