I tried to really pay attention today, at 55mph in 4th I'm at about 2600-2700.
As Mitch said 5th is of no use at that speed unless you're going downhill with
a tailwind.
70mph in 5th is about 3000. The engine does seem happiest around 2500-3000.
No low end grunt at all, I usually wind it out a bit as I ease the clutch out
to get moving.

I'm guessing that the timer is not in action at that speed.
Most of the timers seem to hit full advance somewhere around
2000 rpm, I wouldn't want to cruise below 2200.
