Someone (Marshall?) gave the rule of thumb that the amount of play to
shoot for is 1/2 inch at the steering wheel rim.  If you try to go below
that you will be wearing the box out prematurely.

Bad tie rod ends and bad wheel bearings can also contribute to steering
play.
