Mine does the nailing at idol when cold (well, cold for the desert...when I first start it in the morning when it gets down to 50 degrees) and then it will do the random one when driving at low speeds (in the neighborhood). Haven't ran purge through it in a year or so....or is it something more you reckon?

My S350 was nailing horribly when I first got it. The injector springs
were worn causing them to fire too soon. A set of rebuilt injectors
quieted things down nicely.

einjection timing. All is well with the engine as far as I know. It
sounds healthy - just noisier that I guess it should be. Sould a bit
like a direct injection truck engine of the 80's . Any thoughts?
