I think the terms are used to refer to motorcycles and narrow vehicles like that. If I understand properly, "lane sharing" would be riding two-abreast in the same lane. "Lane splitting" would be riding in between the travel lanes, like to squeeze between cars that are stopped in traffic. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
