At one time, the mount of gas, diesel, etc extracted from a barrel of oil depended on the oil. At that time, diesel as almost a waste product. But through modern cracking & reformulation processes, the refineries can choose what they get out of a barrel & you can get more gas per gallon of crude oil than diesel. It also doesn't help that diesel is taxed more per gallon than gas.
