Brian - not only the "average young driver today" - on the MBCA Route 66 tip last September, one (more senior) club member filled up their E320 CDI with gasoline. The MBUSA chase mechanic we had along did his best, but the car had to be towed to a dealer, and many $$$$ later, the car was back on the road. All that high pressure plumbing, catalysts, sensors can be quickly damaged - not to mention the cylinder heads and other parts. And as mentioned on these lists a while back, not all stations adhere to the notion that only Diesel fuel pump nozzles should be green - there's been more than a few (BP?) stations with green nozzles on gasoline pumps.

Yes, the "quiet and smokeless operation" and the lack of identifying badges
makes me think of another point:

I wonder how many instances of incorrect fueling at the filling station will
result from the more stealthy diesel identity. But then again, I really
wonder if any average young driver today would know to use diesel fuel in a diesel. I'm sure all most of them really are aware of are regular, premium,
ultra and so on. I think that were it not for the popularity of diesel 4x4
trucks, most kids would not have a clue what that smelly, grimy green gas
pump is for.
