the "split screwdriver" nuts can also be removed with a pair of needle-nose pliers placed into the grooves - mine fit great.

That is correct, but you need a split kind of screwdriver for the nuts on the hinges. Look at them and you will see. You can grind a cheap screwdriver to have a middle gap to fit.
