There is no self diagnostic function on the catalytic converter, easy thing is to plug your car into a computer and see what the go is. You can spend $$$$'s on replacing stuff, only to find that a wire was loose somewhere. The series 124's have quite a sophisticated self diagnostic system and overall it is more cost effective to pay a equipped Merc workshop to analyze your car, rather than spending money on replacing serviceable parts. Perhaps Rusty could let you know how much a cat for your car is. Generally if everything else checks out fine, then the catalytic converter is thought to be the trouble of high emissions. I take it you are running the correct grade of fuel for your car?
