It's a slow process.  Just switch to synthetic.  If you know that the
motor is really dirty change the filter often, maybe every thousand
miles or so, a few times.  May take tens of thousands of miles to
really clean everything out.

No, I've never torn down an engine to verify that it's clean.  But
enough knowledgable people (e.g. Marshall) have made the cleaning
claim about Mobil 1 that I have no reason to doubt it.

I've heard of using transmission fluid (e.g. drain the oil and fill
with transmission fluid), and running at idle speed only, to clean up
stuck rings, etc.  I don't think I'd do it unless the only other
option was a rebuild, but some people have reported success.
