Unfortunately that's what everything is going - plastics and electronics - 
both can be difficult or impossible to repair.  a 50 year old Leica will 
keep on snapping - while a newer Minolta gets a electronic bug and refuses 
to do anything.  Only can be repaired at the Repair Center and only by 
replacing stuff - nothing is repaired, only replaced.  When they decide to 
stop making the replacement electronic gizmos the whole camera becomes a 
paperweight.

And if you look in your furnace you will see the same thing - wires and 
black boxes.
