Okay, here's one of my famous "different" questions. Bear with me:
On our 190D 2.5, I was looking into the oil filler hole in the valve cover.
As I looked at the lobe of the camshaft that I could most easily see, I
noticed that I could see marks on it from wear. They were sort of black
marks - or dark anyway. I ran my fingernail across them and I don't think I
felt anything.

Question is: If I had more engine experience, I would know this, but are the
marks indicative of unusual or excessive wear? Or are you pretty much going
to see that type of thing normally?

The odometer is at about 271k mi. The car runs quite well, and the seller
claimed a rebuilt engine and trans. My guess is that's a lie. But the way
the car runs, though, it feels like new. Easy starting and has power right
away pretty much. Somewhat rough and noisy for the first 5 - 8 seconds after
startup though. Oh and there's that troublesome ticking that comes and goes
every few seconds.

Unfortunately, we can't afford to have the oil tested right now, and I don't
know what I'd do with the news anyway.
