I would encourage you to buy something in the metric
cruiser class, like a Virago 750 or possibly 1100 like
mine. These can cruise all day long at highway speeds
and are large enough to give you the power necessary
to navigate in traffic and keep up on the interstate.
One thing I discovered about the Virago quite by
accident is that the model has been in production for
many years (they just recently retired it) and as a
result it's like VWs - lots of them out there, a big
aftermarket for parts and accessories and a population
large enough that there will be plenty of stuff for it
for years to come. There were (typically) 500cc,
750cc and 1100cc models, all of which were more or
less interchangeable with each other with the
exception of the engine. Shaft drive makes them
relatively maintenance free.
Find a good used one for a couple of grand, invest in
a windscreen and a Mustang seat, and you'll be in
great shape for years to come.
I bought mine for $1800 with 46,000 miles on it, and
it cruises like the day it was delivered. With the
Mustang seat I can go for hours without getting monkey
butt. I also have a pair of Leatherlyke saddlebags
which make it really nice as far as carrying stuff.
I probably have $3k wrapped up in the bike, but if I
decide I ever want to get rid of it the bags and seat
will retain their value and can be sold separately.
I average in the high 30s around here, and that's with
about 80-20 city/highway cycle. if I do a complete
tank on the highway that moves into the mid 40s or
better.
