There have been recent efforts to do away with that 'armed populace' thing and bring Switzerland in step with the 'civilized' world. From the EU's (and especially the UK's) point of view, a military rifle in every house is just a horrible thing. (but in USA, having one in every civilian police car is just wonderful) Many progressive thinking Swiss gov't leaders are starting to agree, but they are still in the minority. I believe that having nearly everybody in the military, and all the military keeping machine guns at home is the reason why home invasions are so rare in Switzerland.
