It was like that when I "met" Merkaartor.

Same workflow as yours (besides the separate tool because I don't need it).
I'm not convince there is any utility of GPX tracks upload/download. when
you use Merkaartor or JOSM.
When downloading in crowded areas, you basically end up with an unusable
screen full of black dots ;-)
If you want to map places you don't have tracks for, Yahoo is better, I
think.
Still needed for Potlach, though, I guess.

Not mine to answer as I basically don't use GPX. My GPS only export NMEA.
