In the case of the 386, there was "no person will need that at all" :-)
That's why FRACTINT (a DOS fractal program, also ported to Windows, Linux/Unix,
and I believe some other platforms too) introduced arbitrary precision zooming:
To keep processors busy in the days where they could look back at `Grandpa's
days where they *only* had Pentium processors'.
