well, chances are those 20-somethings were much MUCH 
smaller exponents, hence less CPU time.  They could well
be folks who dropped out some time ago and stopped working
on new exponents.

re the relative ranking within this group, I suspect
the system is tracking a few more places than being
printed on the listings.

sticking around for the long run IS the best way
of moving up.  I run about 8 systems total ranging
from 133MHz to 500Mhz and have managed to get myself
up to around 47-50 by sheer persistence.  I was running
on nothing but a single P100 for almost a year before 
Primenet ever came into existance, I've retired that 
processor now as its time per exponent is just too
high (besides its running linux now and I've never
bothered to figure out the linux client).
