Yes! As Harald Alvestrand said, not so much because of the size of
the .gifs, but because of the time it takes for the browser to
connect to the server. (I'm also in Europe, specifically Denmark)

No not particularly. It works quite well as it is, and frames isn't
very friendly to text-mode browsers (ie. lynx).
