Well things like pui or glut don't work too well (for me at least) with
the
3dfx opengl (fro V2). So there still is good reason to use Mesa.
Not forgetting that currently Mesa is also quite much faster for me
compared
to 3dfx drivers. (I am not 100% sure about my measurements because
installing
the Q3 drivers changed my setup significantly)
I am also wondering about the autoconfig stuff, because I thought its
main
use was on software packages which used a wide variety of UNIX library
calls which had different usage patterns and/or semantics on different
UNIX
systems. Is it really needed on Mesa?

PS. I am also a fan of the (Perl) Metaconfig instead of GNU Autoconfig.
I like its "chatting" style more than the GNU "silent -- I know it all"
style.
