Instead of using cp other software installs the library files in the target
directory first, then changes
working directory to the target directory and creates the sym-links. In GNU
Emacs 'make install' uses tar
to transfer the created files into the target area. Both methods do not rely on
special features of a
particular programme. This is the background of my question.

It was built, but it was not installed in the given target, /usr/X11R7/lib.
Apple's X11 provides libOSMesa.
4.0 in /usr/X11R6/lib.
