I wonder if the commit scripts can't be hacked up to elide the patch 
information when it exceeds a certain threshold in size.  

Also - a pet hate is that in multiple commit git messages, you have to scroll 
through the email searching for the description of each separate commit.  It'd 
be nice to have at least all the short commit descriptions at the head of the 
email, and then go into the full description + patch stuff later.

Just FYI:  I've been pushing some big commits to the branch. I've been 
discarding the commit messages (as list admin) since they've sometimes 
been 500KB or larger.

So stuff is happening on the branch, despite the lack of check-in 
messages.
