I'm not sure whether this is hardware-specific or not, but I've been experiencing frequent abort()s when running compiz on i965 hardware and mesa from git ( http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16190 ). It's a pretty bad bug and is triggered at least once a day on my machine. I haven't tried mesa_7_1_rc1 but I'd bet it exhibits the bug considering how recently it was tagged. Unfortunately, I haven't found a way to reliably reproduce the crash or else I'd try rc1.
