That's the way it was years ago.  But there were complaints and bug 
reports from people wondering why they had direct rendering but no 
hardware acceleration.

There was (and maybe still is) a mental association between direct 
rendering and hardware rendering.

I'm happy to change glXIsDirect() to return True and see what happens...
