Corbin, Jakob & I have been doing a bit of work improving the 'vbuf' interface coming out of the draw module on a feature branch, with the aim of hopefully avoiding some problems in the backends that maybe you're seeing now. It might be worth taking a look at that work & commenting. We'll probably merge it later today in any case, but there's still opportunity to make further changes if need be.
