I can reproduce problem here (GM965): With VBO and the intel driver I get a black window. With the -novbo option or using LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 it looks just like glxgears.
I use kernel 2.6.29-rc8, xserver-xorg-video-intel "2:2.7.0-1, libdrm-intel1 2.4.9-1. The kernel I compiled myself, the rest is from Debian unstable.
