Still sounds to me like you've got an installation problem (tools
stack version doesn't match engine, or maybe the tools stack has
gotten messed up somehow). You should probably just download and
install the Linux version again, or at the very least download a fresh
copy of mctools.mc from ftp://ftp.metacard.com/MetaCard/mctools.mc
