Correction: there should only be two colors after painting. If you
use a GIF for a cursor, there should be 3 colors (as specified
above). But most paint packages dump a full colormap into the image
header even if only 2 (or 3) colors are used, so painting is usually
the best way to generate cursors.

Also note that painting is only supported on UNIX systems in the
current 2.2.5 release. You can paint on Windows and MacOS in the 2.3
beta, though.
