I'd like to get "hold of" some telnet features in Metacard. In particular
the ability to get some environmental variables, and the location of some
key programs (ie "which perl" or which mc").

Does the FTP protocol allow setting permissions on a remote computer? And if
implementing telnet is problematic can any of these functions also be
implemented with telnet?
