This could be done on PC/Mac using a product like DeBabelizer
(http://www.debabelizer.com/), or on UNIX using NetPBM
(http://www.unix.digital.com/demos/freekit/html/netpbm.htm)

Doing it with filters in NetPBM and the shell() function or open
process command would be very straightforward.
