Since you saw it fit to criticize the external on this list, I'll respond
of this list.

Ah, that where I have a surprise up my sleeve. I've been working on text
to speech for Mac and Windows. The next version already supports:
1) get a list of all available voices, by gender if you want
2) change pitch and words per minute of the voice
3) change voice used to speak
4) speak any amount of text, and stop speech

It's saves to QT AIFF format I think. Very well, next version will save
to a sound resource in the resource fork. You can then play it on
multiple sound channels.
Very well, the next version will support saving a sound to the resource
fork 

Oh, and before you ask the next version should be ready next week.
