This is not quite right, at least given the above syntax, which will
export the image in whatever it's current format is if compressed
(GIF/JPEG/PNG/PICT) and in a raw, unusable format otherwise (imported
snapshots, painted images, or BMP/XWD/XPM).  To export as PBM, you
need to do:
select image 1
export paint to file "whatever.pbm"
