There is for Linux/Apache HTTP servers some softs able to do those tests
for you : the "Apache AB Tool" that you can find in most distributions
is one of them. You can find the same kind of stuff for windows and
macos at <http://www.softwareqatest.com/qatweb1.html#LOAD>.

About the performances : a mchttpd based server (used with a php3 socket
listener) is better than a postgresql based server and far equivalent to
a mysql based server (about 50 concurrent accesses per seconds seems ok
on my 160Mo/12 Go PII 300 development laptop). If you are on macos, use
tcp/ip sockets instead of appleevents to get the best speed results.
