In reply to my question regarding a problem with characters from the
extended character set not displaying correctly in a Mac standalone even
though they did display correctly in the stack, Scott Raney answered:

I delayed responding until I had a chance to do some more testing and
investigation.

Scott, the stack and the standalone really are working differently.  Go
figure.  However your suggestion to save the stack on the target platform
fixed the problem.  By now I have saved the stack on the Mac several times.
I just now built another standalone, and this one displays the extended
character set characters correctly.

So file this pointer away for future reference, folks.  Saving a stack on
the target platform before building a standalone can prevent extended
character set mismapping, as well as giving the minor performance boost
that Scott mentions.

Scott, if you want to try to figure out what is going on here, I have the
older version of the standalone that has the character display problem and
the newer version that does not, as well as the stack that I could send to
you.  They are very large--5.6 MB for the standalones--because they include
quite a few sound files, so the size provides disincentive for sending them.

Regarding characters in the symbol font from the extended set, this didn't
come up because I was only using the Greek letters that we mathematicians
are so attached to.  These correspond directly to the standard Latin
alphabet letters.
