Well, yes and no, but it isn't safe to assume that's the case. In its
virgin state, MacOS won't recognize the association. When you
double-click a file to open it, and the Mac doesn't know the creator of
the file, it will ask you what application to use. When you choose the
app, it makes the association and remembers it, but only if the File
Exchange control panel is set to retain the associations. Users can turn
off the feature, or tell it to ask but not remember the choices. So you
can't assume that in all cases the Mac will recognize the association.
Better to use the type and creator codes to make sure.

Usually on a Mac you would use AppleScript to do this. AppleScript can
open an application based on its creator code, but it isn't
straightforward. I don't have a copy of the discussion about it that
happened on the HyperCard list recently, but you might find the scripts
if you do a search in the HyperCard archives at <
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HyperCard/ > I think it was posted within
the last 2 weeks or so.
Or there might be an easier way within MetaCard to find the application,
but I don't know what it would be.
