My vote goes for 4, as the most flexible option offering the most control. Would 
"none" work as a color indicating not to draw it at all?

set the focusColor of fld "test" to empty -- use the default
set the focusColor of fld "test" to red -- use red
set the focusColor of fld "test" to none -- no focus rect
