Let's use Occam razor. Why on earth anybody would be interested in Metamath
which is even more obscure than Coq or Lean? Was there a hype to attract
someone here? Ok, there was Metamath book. I read it, he read it too. Is
that a hype? People want to understand mathematics and proofs. They found
known textbooks not satisfactory. In fact even some mathematicians find it
not satisfactory and they turn to Lean, Coq or Metamath. Were they
following a hype? I would call this a movement (e.g.
https://xenaproject.wordpress.com), because these people know what they are
searching for.

And I can only say it again: Metamath is as good as it gets to render
existing proofs, but there is neither good assistant nor automation for
newbie to create new ones. There is nothing new at all.
