Hi Mike and list, What you are doing is probably the best advise I have seen written for regarding this subject. Are you sure you are a "newbie"?. Common sense is what it's all about.
I took one Ebay seller (Romansells) to task some time ago. He was purposely selling slag as meteorites and had been doing so for 2-3 years, despite the numerous mailings he got from list members. Finally I resorted to setting up a name and email address utilizing Hotmail for the express purpose of warning other bidders, so that my true Ebay name was not damaged. I've stopped doing that practice simply because too many new meteorwrongs pop up all the time, and frankly I just don't have the time to pursue this endeavor. When I started collecting in 1991 there were only a small handfull of dealer, Haag, Reed, David New, etc. Now there are many. You are right in seeking out the dealers from the list. I have had good luck so far. At this point I can only say that the postings regarding NOT contacting Ebay are correct. Why chop down a whole forest just to get to one dead tree? Don't bug Ebay. We can ill afford to lose the option of selling / buying meteorites, because of a few knucklehead sellers of meteorwrongs. In my opinion if a buyer really wants to know about what is being sold, it IS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY to look at the pics carefully, and if the dealer has links to their meteorite websites from the auction, i.e. Bessey, the buyer needs to look further into the matter. Possibly all dealers could pass along this type of public relations by including a link to Meteorite Central to each of their auction listed on Ebay. Anyone else agree?
