Dave: I have purchased two metal detectors from Ebay and both at reasonable prices.
The Whites XLT (~$600) was not very effective at Gold Basin but my Fisher Gold Bug 2 ($500) was good. I found six small pieces at Gold Basin ranging from 10 g. to 20 g. I recommend the Gold Bug 2 for general meteorite detection. You should be able to find a reasonable bargain on Ebay.
