Michael's opinion is not supported by the facts. Avoiding contact, by whatever means, with infected persons and their secretions has been the most effective way of avoiding contracting contagious disease for years. The Japanese people, when ill with a contagious disease, have a reputation for compassion for others that includes all of the prophylactic measures so far mentioned in this thread...plus wearing surgical masks in public. By simply washing my hands with soap and hot water and using Handi-Wipes I have reduced, what used to be a two, or three, times a year siege of respiratory illness to not having had an episode in several years.
