This year's Mars opposition will be on August 27th. The last time Mars was closer to Earth at oposition was on September 12th, in the year 57616 BC, or about 60,000 years ago. I don't see any relation to the 70,000 year number. Incidently, the next time Mars will be as close after this year's opposition won't be until the year 2287.
