Hello John and list,

John came up with his top 10 list:

Top 10 Classic Meteorites

1. Sikhote-Alin: an iron from a Russian fall in 1947
2. Canyon Diablo: an iron found near Meteor Crater, USA
3. Allende: a carbonaceous chondrite fall in Mexico in 1969
4. Gibeon: an iron found in Africa
5. Gao: a stone from a 1960 fall in Burkino Faso
6. Murchison: an awesome carbonaceous fall in Australia in 1969
7. Esquel: a pallasite type stony-iron found in South America
8. Zagami: a 1962 Martian fall in Nigeria, Africa
9. Henbury: an iron found in Australia
10. Vaca Muerta: a mesosiderite type stony-iron found in South America

And then suggested we "try our own."

Here is my own list and ranking.

1. Gibeon....I've always considered this meteorite 101.

2. Canyon Diablo...history rich.

3. Allende....great timing in its fall...we were getting ready to study moon rocks...and the large mass of material available makes this the most studied and a part of most meteorite collection.

4. Imilac.not the best looking palasite....but close. Very stable and lots of material, fair price.

5. Henbury....thousands a pieces found around the second authenticated meteorite crater.

6. Millibilliiie. A "common" eucrite....no way you say!

7. Sikhote-Alin....its the queen of meteorites.

8. Cape York....one of the largest meteorites with much more on the collectors market then you would imagine.

9. Vaca Muerta....dead cow. Nothing more needs to be said about this nice looking and many times unusual meteorite.

10. Plainview....for many years the most common stone meteorite...plus Nininger related.

Extra credit: A big crusted moroccan. For price, crust, character and all. If your wanting a museum size piece on an everyday budget.....think moroccan. It may lack the history, but all collections should be able to own one giant meteorite.

Handshakes,

Mark Bostick
