G'day List,
I just received my slice of NWA 3099 (L/LL3) from Stefan and I
have to say it is one of the best, if the THE best meteorites I have ever seen.
I've never seen so many different features in one meteorite, let alone one
slice. Apart from the chondrule metropolis there are many other inclusions
and/or clasts. In my 11.8g slice I can see:
- Around 1-2 troilite inclusions per sq cm.
- Reasonable amount of visible metallic
iron.
- Armoured (with troilite) chondrules.
- Armoured (with metallic iron) chondrules.
- Carbonaceous inclusions?
- Achondritic inclusions/clasts? (the
big inclusion looks almost like a howardite with dark angular
fragments)
- Barred chondrules
What's going on here?!? Maybe someone could also explain how
you get an LL3 with achondritic type inclusions. Is this even possible? (It has
a shock rating of 4 too.) There are some links below to scanned images. They
don't do the piece justice but are better than nothing and are fairly large
too.
There are more photos also on Stefan's page: http://www.meteoriten.com/special.html
I would certainly appreciate any opinions on this
beauty.
Cheers,
