Mark, help yourself to the popcorn, and please get me some Junior Mints...

I just got my Masters about a month ago. In the congratulatory gifts I
received, and the Christmas haul that followed, I was able to divide them
neatly into 2 piles: those that were library-related, and those that were
meteorite-related. The meteorite ones were shirts, mugs, calendars, and a
license-plate frame. No one bought me an actual meteorite; I think they know I
would rather buy the meteorites I want for my collection myself. Not to
mention, most of my friends and family, although they know I am a
meteorite-hound, know next to nothing about it themselves; it's just "Tracy's
eccentric hobby."

Speaking of that, I just got a lovely slice of the Vermillion pallasite. Only
about 20 more pallasites to go! If I were in a position to go hunting, my
personal Grail would be finding a new pallasite.

I don't think it's necessarily a gender thing. Meteoritics (sp?) is still in
its infancy as a science, compared to established fields like physics. Think
of how many women were in the hard sciences and engineering prior to the
beginning of the 20th century, and how many of them are well known. Women were
notable researchers in their own right, but got no publicity. I'm sure there
are a lot of individuals out there who collect and do research, who just are
very quiet about it. As our field matures, we will see greater participation
by all types of people.
