Unless he was the original thief (or a collaborator), he probably wouldn't be exposed to theft charges anyway. Possession of or trafficking in stolen property, maybe. Not sure how either Arizona or Wisconsin law would deal with that, but I wouldn't say it's risk free.

IANAL, but as far as I can tell, this Diablo is way, way, way beyond Arizona's Statute of Limitations for theft. Returning the meteorite is the "nice" thing to do, but he was in no risk whatsoever keeping it or reselling it however he
pleased.
