At the very least the writer should be reprimanded, and a retraction
should be printed.

After posting the Chicago Tribune article I came across another article from
Channel 27 WKOW, Madison, WI and this is what it said at the end of the
article.....
"If you've got something that could be a meteorite, contact the UW's Geology Museum
for advice. You can probably sell it for $10 an ounce, but be cautious about working
with a meteorite hunter who approaches you because it's possible they'll try to take
meteorites from your property and sell them."
