The issue was not that the OP were stupid, but that (s)he was raised in 
a school system that fails to transfer very elementary knowledge in 
science and maths. From my experiene as Biochem teacher in a medial 
school, I can confirm this. All our students have a bachelor of science, 
yet when some have to ask what the sign ">" means (sic!), than there is 
something very wrong. 

That is admittedly an extreme case, but most of our students are unable 
to calculate with the rule of proportions. In other words, they would be 
unable to calculate the correct dose of a drug, given a dosage 
recommendation of x mg/kg and the mass of the child.
