The issue was not that the OP were stupid, but that (s)he was raised in a school system that fails to transfer very elementary knowledge in science and maths. From my experiene as Biochem teacher in a medial school, I can confirm this. All our students have a bachelor of science, yet when some have to ask what the sign ">" means (sic!), than there is something very wrong. That is admittedly an extreme case, but most of our students are unable to calculate with the rule of proportions.
