Glad that solved your problem. Perhaps being able to handle raw html intermingled with prose was a feature we lost when we upgraded to tinymce4. It likely it can be re-enabled with the correct tinymce configuration. (See http://mezzanine.jupo.org/docs/configuration.html#tinymce-setup-js).
